When I started this blog, I lived in London with my husband Sockwearingenglishman (SWE), but I’ve recently moved out of London to a town in Hertfordshire which is leafy, green and serene. Although I’ve lived in England for a number of years, and am technically a grown-up woman with a career, I still feel like the girl who grew up in Africa getting ‘duiweltjie’ thorns in my feet and fighting with my mother when she insisted I put shoes on when we ‘went to town’. The compromise was usually taking my shoes with me in our vinyl seated peugeot as long as they were on my feet by the time the car was parked. I still kick my shoes off as soon as I possibly can.

This blog is my attempt to reconcile my internal barefooted Africanness with life in the UK.
